The Georgia Dietetic Foundation (GDF), established in 1995, is a 501(C)(3) non-profit foundation. Over the past 20 years, GDF has awarded $55,000 to 50 students, $17,303 for professional development grants, and $4,500 for five professional development stipends. Foundation activities have included monetary donations to local community organizations; support for statewide educational meetings, including the GAND Annual Convention and Exhibition; and promotion of delivery of up-to-date nutrition information and services to Georgians.
The mission of GDF is to promote the health and well-being of Georgia citizens through nutrition education by supporting the education and professional development of dietetic and other health care professionals.
GDF awards one or more scholarships per year to qualified candidates in graduate, undergraduate, and supervised practice programs. The amount of each scholarship is $1500. Candidates do not have to be Georgia residents but must be enrolled in or accepted to a Georgia program. The recipients of the awards will be recognized at the Annual Conference and Exhibition (ACE). The postmark deadline for submitting all the information requested is April 30th. All applicants will be notified by June 15th.

Shelby Utter is the 2015 recipient of the Ellen Jurgens Memorial Scholarship. Shelby is a graduate of Georgia State University Dietetic program and was accepted and began her internship with Emory University in August 2015. After a visit to her Mother’s hometown in the Philippines and experiencing the use of food, botanical supplements and healing rituals as an alternative approach to medicine, Shelby was inspired by this and ultimately led to her decision to study nutrition and the goal of becoming a Registered Dietitian. Shelby’s goals are to continue to build her network base through community involvement and eventually develop a business that utilizes a preventative approach to medicine and advancement of our healthcare system.
Andrea Lobene is the 2015 recipient of Georgia Dietetic Foundation Scholarship. Andrea is currently a student at the University of Georgia combined MS/DI program and estimated graduation is August 2016. Andrea’s family history of diabetes and observing the difficulties making necessary lifestyle changes to manage their diabetes has inspired her to help others manage their nutrition-related problems – and choose to major in dietetics. Her goals are to complete the MS/DI program and continue her education to obtain a Ph.D. in Nutrition, and to become a professor and conducting research at a university.
